Discord Stuck On RTC Connecting? Try These Fixes

Discord can’t use Real-Time Communications feature when there is connection issue or other bugs. Instead, it gets stuck on the RTC Connecting message. If this happens, restarting Discord usually fixes the issue. You may also need to restart the router and your computer.

It is also possible that the Discord Server is down for maintenance, for which you only need to wait for some time. In such cases, you can check its status from the Discord Status website.

Apart from these, you may also need to make a few changes to the application or system configuration depending on your situation.

Set Different Server Region

It is also possible for the server in the region you are connected with to have some problems. Users could change the region for the whole server. But, Discord has recently removed this setting.

Server admins can change the region for voice channels, though. So if have admin access follow the steps below to modify the setting. If not, try contacting the admin and have them make the necessary changes.

  1. Right-click on the voice channel and click on Edit Channel.
  2. In the Overview tab, locate Region Override and set it to another region from the drop-down list.
  3. Select Save Changes.

  4. Do so for different locations until the Discord getting stuck on RTC Connecting issue resolves.

Disable QoS in Discord Settings

As stated in the discord app itself, some routers are known to misbehave when Quality of Service High Packet Priority is ‘on’. So, try disabling the option and see if it helps.

  1. In Discord, go to Home (top-left) and click on User Settings.
  2. Click on Voice & Video from the left sidebar and scroll down to Quality of Service.
  3. Toggle Off the Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority option.
    disable-qos-discord
  4. Restart Discord.

Use Legacy Audio Subsystem

Similar to the above case, the Standard Audio Subsystem can show some problems depending on your router. Many users have noted a better experience with the Legacy Subsystem. So, you can try changing this setting if Discord gets stuck on RTC Connecting error.

  1. Go to User Settings in Discord.
  2. Click on Voice & Video and scroll down to Audio Subsystem.
  3. Click the drop-down box and set it to Legacy.
    set-legacy-subsystem-discord

Restart Discord and check if the error persists.

Reinstall Discord Client

The reason for the error may be the Discord app itself. You can check this quickly by opening Discord on a web browser. Completely uninstalling the app and reinstalling it should fix this issue.

  1. Close the app completely. Make sure to check in the Task Manager to be sure.
  2. Open Run by pressing Win + R.
  3. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open the Uninstall or change a program feature.
  4. Search for Discord on the list and select it.
  5. Click on Uninstall to remove it from your system.uninstall-discord-windows
  6. Enter %appdata% on the Run command to open the AppData/Roaming folder.
  7. Here, search for the Discord folder and delete it.
  8. Similarly, enter %localappdata% on the Run to open AppData/Local folder.
  9. Look for the Discord folder and delete this one as well.

After uninstalling Discord, reinstall it from its official website.

Try Alternative DNS Servers

Issues with the DNS server can cause frequent connection errors. Changing the DNS server address is a good solution for such cases.

  1. Open the Run command.
  2. Type ncpa.cpl and press Enter to open Network Connections.
  3. Right-click on your internet connection and choose Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  5. Check the Use the following DNS server addresses option and set the server addresses according to your preference. DNS server set manually

You can use the free Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudfare servers (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1).

Clear Network Cache

Your system’s DNS cache stores the addresses of previously visited websites or URLs so that it can easily access them again next time. However, if the server address changes, trying to connect with the server fails. You need to clear the cache to fix this issue.

  1. Open Run.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
  3. Enter the following commands:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig-release-flushdns-renew

End Background Apps

Some background apps can interfere with Discord’s voice and video connection feature, causing this issue. Make sure to properly close all the apps that use the voice or video call feature to avoid such issues.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
  2. Under Apps and Background processes, locate all the aforementioned processes, like Twitch, Skype, etc.
  3. Right-click on them and pick End Task.end-task-viber

Disable Browser Protection in Third-party Antivirus

Some third-party antivirus can block access to specific networks. It may also be a case of false identification of threats on the web. You can try disabling real-time or browser protection on such antivirus programs and check if you can join a call.

Uninstalling the programs temporarily is also a solution if you can’t disable browser protection.

Also, make sure that there is no restriction for Discord in your computer’s or the router’s firewall settings.

Change Virtual Private Network

Discord doesn’t work well with VPNs that do not support UDP. So, check if your VPN only supports TCP and uninstall it or convert to a different one in such cases. Check if a VPN supports UDP before changing to that VPN.
